Henrik Stenson shot a flawless 63 in the final round of the Open Championship at Royal Troon to claim a three-shot victory over Phil Mickelson.

On an enthralling final day Stenson maintained his famous ice cool composure to birdie four of his final five holes and win his first major with an Open Championship record score of 20 under par.

Mickelson was unlucky to miss out on victory, shooting an impressive 65, which included an eagle and four birdies, to finish 11-shots clear of third placed JB Holmes.

He will be left to rue what might have been, after dropping just four shots all week and has now finished runner-up at a major championship on eleven separate occasions.

Mickelson started the day one behind the Stenson, and the pair traded blows for much of the round as the lead swung back and forth between the two players. A birdie flourish by Stenson was enough to undo the American and Stenson calmly slotted in a 15-footer on the 18th to claim victory.

Rory McIlroy finished fifth alongside England's Tyrrell Hatton on four under after a last day 67 in what was a frustrating week for the Irishman.
