The Peugeot Coronation Foursomes champions for 2014 are Jenny Gibson and Marie Canavan from Belvoir Park, Belfast.

They stormed their way to a great closing total of 39 points in the handicap stableford event on the Eden Course at St Andrews, just pipping Tina Earley and Elaine Coomber (Redlibbets) on a better inward half.

The champions will now tee it up in the pro-am of the Ricoh Women’s British Open next year at Turnberry in Scotland.

Jenny, a seven-handicapper, and Marie, playing off 23, picked up 21 points on the way home. “We didn’t know how good our back nine was until we added up the card. We birdied the sixteenth and then finished the eighteenth really well with a four-footer.”

Coming from a club with over 300 lady members, Marie was immediately inundated with text messages and phone calls from well-wishers at home.

Marie said, “It’s a totally, totally fantastic competition. Every lady should be competing at their club, it is such a treat. We are the third pair to qualify for the finals from Belvoir, so it is a case of third time lucky. It is very emotional."

With an entry list of 30,000 ladies from golf clubs throughout the Great Britain & Ireland, the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes is thought to be the biggest participation event in ladies golf. Players compete at their local clubs before qualifying for one of 16 area finals.

Shona Malcolm CEO of the LGU said "The Peugeot Coronation Foursomes is now in its 61st year and allows people of all handicaps and ages to experience competition. It is really a once in a lifetime experience for qualifiers, and the prize is to play your way into the final. It helps to spread the word about the LGU, the event, and St Andrews itself.”

Sally Sparrow of Peugeot said; “I’m very impressed with all the organisation for the event. This is the eleventh year of our sponsorship and we have a very close relationship with both the LGU and the PGA.”

All finalists stayed at the Old Course Hotel, St Andrews, and the event concluded with dinner and spectacular panoramic views of the Home of Golf.
