Katrina Gillum has broken the Ladies’ course record at Shrewsbury Golf Club in the first round of the Shropshire Ladies’ County Golf Championships.

In a round featuring seven birdies she shot 71 gross, two below par and five below the standard scratch for the day of 76.

Nineteen year old Katrina who plays off 1 handicap has aspirations to be a professional golfer and play on the Ladies European Tour. Her record breaking round featured birdies on the third, sixth, seventh, eighth, thirteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth holes.

“I’m really pleased to have broken Shrewsbury’s course record. It came as a surprise as I was focused on putting in a good first round for the competition. I’ve been practicing hard and learning a great deal from my coach, so I’m playing well at the moment. The course was in great condition, which helps challenge you to play to a high standard of golf. When I put the card in I knew the score was a good one and suddenly I’m being congratulated on a new course record,” said Katrina.

Shrewsbury’s Lady Captain, Tina Robinson, said: “Katrina has played the course exceptionally well and we are delighted for her. Her impressive round beats the previous record and we shall be displaying Katrina’s card with pride in the club to celebrate her achievement.”

Shropshire Ladies’ County Golf Club Championship Organiser, Sheila Parker, said: “I’d like to congratulate Katrina on a great round of golf. This competition always fields a high calibre of golfer from across the county and it’s wonderful that Katrina has broken Shrewsbury ladies’ course record in the first round of this prestigious county tournament. I wish her well in her pursuit of a professional golfing career.”
