What's On Your Christmas Wish List?

Come Christmas morning our correspondent, Phillipa Kennedy, hopes to receive some thoughtful gifts, and her letter to Santa might give you some ideas if you are struggling to decide what to buy your golf-mad friends and family.

As the next edition of Women & Golf hits the shelves today, here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect from columnist Philippa Kennedy this month.

As you get older when it comes to presents - Christmas or otherwise - you’ve actually got everything you need, so really thoughtful gifts are what you really, really want.

They say it’s the thought that counts, but you just have to think a bit harder when buying for someone who’s being playing golf for years.

Women won’t thank you for a lumpy lined tartan wool sweater. Layers are the thing these days. Start from the layer closest to the skin, keep it soft and light, get the colour right and you won’t go far wrong.

If you don’t want to risk wasting money on clothes that will never be worn, think laterally. If someone you love is prepared to go to the trouble to find out details like where you play golf, who is your favourite professional or where you might like to take three friends for a pleasant and sociable fourball, it would mean so much more than a crazy animal headcover that you’ll never use or a box of those little practice balls with holes in them.

If you’re going to buy proper golf balls for someone, have a look in the pouches of their golf bag and see what brand they like. Mind you, in my case, that wouldn’t be much help, as my ball pouch is full of assorted ‘finds’ so it’s probably best to ask, especially if you’re buying for a really good golfer to whom such things really matter.

A golf lesson costs around £40 and is a very acceptable present for a golfer. Even better would be a playing lesson. I’ve always thought that was a bit of an extravagance if I’m paying myself, but I’d love to be given a 9-hole lesson.

I’d also be very happy with a trip to a swanky club where I wouldn’t normally play - a bit more expensive, but perfect if it’s your big present from your nearest and dearest.
