Naga Munchetty

We've all been there - golf can really get to you. But for our single-figure-handicap columnist Naga Munchetty, the game almost got the better of her, and she was very close to walking away for good...

As the next edition of Women & Golf is ready to hit the shelves on Friday 12 October, here’s a sneak preview of what you can expect from columnist Naga Munchetty this month.

I am pleased to say that I have finished my cycling challenges for 2018. They were much harder than I thought they would be, and although I will continue to cycle, I can finally turn my attention to golf properly again - IF I want to ...

Three weeks ago I sent a message to the Handicap Secretary, who is also one of my mixed knockout partners to say,

“I am stepping away from golf for the foreseeable future. I’m not enjoying it and am no longer any good at it. Please withdraw me from all the club competitions for the rest of 2018. Hope you understand X.”

He didn’t reply.

I told my husband, James, that I was finding him another woman to play with (he was still stuck with me as his wife though!). James sighed, knowing that to argue about it would probably make me dig my heels in even further.

I had just had one too many depressing, frustrating and tiresome rounds of golf and I was done.

Even the 19th hole had changed from being a place to celebrate to one where others would commiserate. Why was I torturing myself? Enough. Kaput. I meant it. There is so much else to life that would be so much less angst-ridden.

After my final falling out with golf, I had a mini-break abroad with my ever-patient husband. No golf, no work, just lots of sleep, sunshine and fun. That made a huge difference. On day two of the holiday, I sent another message to my knockout partner “Maybe I’ll play this season, don’t expect too much X.” He replied, “That’s a much better message to receive X.” James gave me a big hug and smiled with relief. I'm not sure he will be smiling as much when we play our next match, but that’s another story...
