Jo Fife was born in Wales and so this was an apt theme for her Lady Captain’s drive-in at Cowdray Park Golf Club in West Sussex. With the Welsh National anthem playing and wearing a Wales T-shirt, she was led to the first tee by her Vice-Captain and teaching professional Hannah Ralph, who also carried a red book to read Jo's 'This is Your Life'.
An 18-hole scramble competition with a twist followed with the two best scores from four counting. A ladies’ fourball team including Jane Powell, Lorna Jarman, Fleur O’Kelly and Kaye Snalam won first prize with an impressive score of 90 points.
The day, which attracted 92 male and female members, was a huge success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Welsh cheese that Jo provided post-round and over £1,000 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Society.
The winning ladies team, plus another all-female fourball regularly attend Hannah Ralph's ladies' clinic. Another seven ladies that participated in the day are lifestyle members, and through their dedication in attending weekly clinics, and with the support of Tim Allen, Director of Golf and the staff in the pro shop, they have recently earned their official handicaps.
Through clinics and lifestyle membership Cowdray Park is clearly on the right track in developing ladies' golf and helping to bridge the gap between starting out in the game to becoming a full member of the club.
