Golfers often fail to put their hands on the club properly. A great swing begins with a great grip so whatever your handicap, here are some drills to help you strike the ball as well as you should.

One Hand Is Better Than Two


Chipping with one hand is a great drill that will train your wrists to stay quiet and this in turn will keep a consistent clubface angle through impact. Begin by practising with your left hand only and then switch to your right hand only.

Hold the finish until the ball stops rolling on the green. This drill improves tempo and encourages the body and arms to work together creating a smooth stroke.

Release The Power


A drill to maximise release and produce power begins with the hands. Set the club in the fingers of both hands and hover your thumbs over the grip. Hit shots from this position and learn to strike the ball without applying too much pressure from your fingers or thumbs on the grip of the club. The forearms should remain relaxed throughout.

This drill will encourage larger muscles to work and take pressure o your hands to feel the need to hit at the ball. The club will accelerate and release through naturally. Remember, this is a drill that will work over a period of time. You will only witness a pure strike when you hit shots with your normal hold on the club.

Hold it Better to Strike it Better

It is by trial and error that you can learn about the e ect grip pressure has on your golf shots.

If you hold the club tightly you will build up so much pressure in your hands that it will run up into your arms and through to your shoulders/neck. Larger muscles will then be restricted in movement. Your shoulders will scrunch up into your ears and shorten the arc of the swing. Ultimately your arms will pull closer to your body lifting the clubface and you will most likely top the ball.
